The X Collar attaches to the anchor holes on the back of the shoulder pads and releases when pulled backwards. This allows the runner to continue forward and helps to prevent the leg injuries that are associated with the horse collar tackle.

The X Collar has been designed to allow full range of motion from the athletes helmet when looking up to catch a pass or while getting down in a stance. It was also designed to stay on during normal game play and when hit in any other direction other than backwards.

Even with the horse collar tackle ban in place the horse collar tackle continues to occur in game play. Coaches, teams, or individual players, may strategically decide that a 15 yard penalty is preferable to allowing a team a scoring opportunity. As such, offensive players are still at risk of the horse collar tackle and the related injuries. Therefore a need exists for an athletic safety equipment that prevents horse collar tackles and protects a player from the possible injuries associated with being the recipient of such a maneuver.
